Color rendering is one of the most important things to remember for indoor gardening. Different colors promote varying degrees of photosynthesis in plants. For instance, did you know that when sunlight shines through a green filter it hinders the plant’s ability to grow and thrive? Choose the right lighting, and your plants will have a better time indoors.
The Science
Individual coloring in plants is caused by chlorophyll and there are four kinds of pigments that create the chlorophyll. They are called Chlorophyll a, Chlorophyll b, Xanthophyll, and Carotene.
Blue light is most strongly absorbed by the pigments, making it the best color in the spectrum for thriving plants. Even though nothing helps promote healthy plants like the sun, blue light helps the plant to grow in artificial, indoor environments. The reason green light is not recommended for indoor environments is because it is so poorly absorbed by plants. It’s actually reflected off of the leaves, giving plants their green color.
Both chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b absorb light most strongly in the red and blue portions of the visible light spectrum.
NaturaLux™
The patented NaturaLux™ Filters enhance the blue and red portions of visible light, which helps to produce a more balanced, whiter light source. As you can see from the graph (left), the spectral peaks of the NaturaLux™ Filter are in the blue and red portions of visible light. You will also note that the green portion of light is suppressed compared to the red and blue light.
Customer Testimonial
“I just wanted to drop you a note to let you know that the African Violet plant that I have sitting on my desk really loves our new lights. Believe it or not, I have had this plant for over five years. It was given to me as a gift on Secretary’s day years ago. It was in a really small pot at that time. I have transplanted it two additional times. When I first received my plant it had beautiful purple flowers all around it. Well, in all these years that I have had this plant it had never flowered again until…you changed the covers on our lights. I have tried to feed it African Violet plant food thinking that would make it bloom. But it would never have any flowers on it. I could not believe it when I saw the purple flowers. My plant is so green and healthy looking. It is just amazing!!”
