Ever heard of a foot-candle unit? If your in my industry, you probably have, but if not Wikipedia is great at explaining things. So, it says a foot- candle measures, “the amount of illumination the inside surface of a one-foot-radius sphere would be receiving if there were a uniform point source of one candela in the exact center of the sphere”
Basically foot-candles are used to measure adequate lighting levels in work spaces. As it turns out the intensity of light in your office can have a negative impact on your day, measured in number of headaches, mistakes, and increased familiarity with directions on bottles of Aspirin.
You probably didn’t know this either:
“the average office environment requires only 20-70 foot-candles (fc) of light in order to perform computer and computer/paper tasks. Yet, in stark contrast, most work sites measure 80-120 (fc) of light” – Naturalux.com
You’ve probably considered all possible options for reducing the tension and stress at work; stress balls, breathing techniques, complementing your boss way too much, but what about the changing the filters covering the fluorescents? Measuring the intensity of light at your desk is pretty easy to do without the foot-candles. If you cant go a single day without squinting at paperwork, taking an aspirin or rubbing your eyes, the light in your office is too intense.
Studies show that lighting inadequacy is affecting, not only workplaces, but schools. After replacing the standard lighting filters in classrooms with Naturalux filters, children who had trouble focusing before were able to focus on there work. What happened? The glare from the fluorescent lights overhead was significantly reduced by Naturalux filters, while maintaing the distribution of light in the room to increase productivity.
